The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) just released its 2009 Bottleneck Analysis of 100 freight-affecting congestion areas across America. Out of the 100 locations, Chicago took the top two positions of congested urban interstate interchanges. Both locations were on or just off of I-90, also known as the Dan Ryan Expressway. For those wishing to reroute away from this area, a map of the area can be found by following this link and then typing “I-90 at I-94” in the search bar.
Also among the top 5 locations with urban interstate congestion: Fort Lee, New Jersey, at I-95 and SR-4; Austin, Texas, along Interstate 35; and Atlanta, Georgia, at I-285 and I-85 North. The entire list of 100 locations can be found by following the 2009 Bottleneck Analysis link above. The Bottleneck Analysis is composed with cooperation from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) as part of the Freight Performance Measures (FPM) initiative. The ATRI and FHWA are currently creating their list of 100 locations for 2010. If you would like to suggest an urban interstate interchange to be monitored for the 2010 research project, please follow this link.
