Hours of service reform: FMCSA ‘working hard’ to sort comments, plot path forward

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is currently in the process of sorting through the more than 5,100 comments filed on its advanced notice of proposed rulemaking — the first phase of a potential review of hours of service regulations that govern truck drivers’ work schedules — and is deciding whether it will proceed with a proposal to overhaul those regs, says Joe DeLorenzo, FMCSA’s director of enforcement and compliance.

In a brief tweet posted Thursday, Tesla boss Elon Musk says the company has “acquired trucking capacity” to help aid in the delivery of its Model 3 electric car, which has been plagued by production problems and years-late deliveries to those who ordered the vehicle.

CARB’s latest requirement: Year-model 2022 engines and beyond must record emissions data

The California Air Resources Board on Thursday announced that, starting for year-model 2022 vehicles, heavy-duty engines will need to store data related to emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and fuel consumption. The data will be used by regulators to “identify vehicles with excess smog-related and greenhouse gas emission,” CARB said in a press release Thursday.

Groups press FMCSA for extended on-duty, drive times for livestock haulers
